A tragic incident linked to a prolonged land ownership dispute has been reported from Silma Gram Panchayat in Batouli development block of Chhattisgarh's Surguja district. The dispute over approximately 6.30 acres of private leased land escalated into violence on Sunday, leading to the death of 60-year-old Hoshram, who was allegedly crushed by a tractor.
According to police officials, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, and further investigations are underway.
Background of the Dispute
The disputed land originally belonged to Kameshwari, a childless woman. Family members claim that Kameshwari was cared for by Dhaneshwari and her husband Hoshram for many years. As a result, Kameshwari reportedly transferred the land to Dhaneshwari through a will during her lifetime.
However, Kameshwari's nephew Bhuneshwar Painkra and his son Bajrang Painkra have also been claiming ownership rights over the same property. The disagreement between the two families has continued for nearly five years.
Case Pending Before Revenue Authorities
Both parties had submitted applications for mutation of the land records before the Revenue Department. The matter is currently pending before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office for a final decision.
The ongoing legal dispute eventually escalated into a violent confrontation, culminating in the death of Hoshram.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the incident, local police registered a case and swiftly arrested eight accused individuals. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal attack and are collecting evidence from the scene.
Officials stated that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
