The Yukon administration said it would end kickbacks on all Tesla products as it targets companies linked to tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is also a senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Ranj Pillai said the moves were in response to the latest U.S. tariffs, which he said continued to stabilize global markets and disturb Yukons about their future.
The government is also reviewing satellite internet accounts with Musk’s Starlink Company and canceling unwanted accounts “business continuity or emergency response”, the statement said.
The Yukon government will also end its account on X through its social media site XAI, which it owns on XAI AI, saying residents will be able to access information elsewhere.
The axe discount for Tesla products is provided through Yukon’s Good Energy Program, which offers thousands of dollars to those with electric vehicles.
The government website says a good energy plan provides qualified zero-emission vehicles for $4,000 to $5,000, similar commercial vehicles up to $10,000, and kickbacks for used cars and chargers.
Pillay said the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration continue to violate trade agreements and threaten generations of partnerships between Canada and the United States.
Pillay said he spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other Canadian prime ministers about “unreasonable” tariffs against the automotive industry.
“These tariffs will directly affect Canadian auto workers and lack of clarity on what this means for global trade will continue to undermine global market stability and make Canadians and Yukons feel uneasy about their future,” he said.
Earlier this year, the territory ended selling of American liquor products in government-operated liquor stores and ended all future purchases from government wholesale liquor distributors.
