A Windsor-Essex program that supports the challenge of drug use for young people in Africa and Canada has been given a new name.
Windsor Essex Community Health Center (WECHC) announced Friday the launch of Amani, the new name for the substance abuse program formerly known as the African Canadian and Caribbean youth.
The mission of providing culturally responsive mental health and medication use support for Black youth remains the same despite name changes.

“Amani represents a space where black youth can find cultural care and meaningful support,” said Nadine Manroe-Wakerell, Clinical Practice of Veshik.
“This evolution enhances our commitment to ensuring youths get the resources they need to recover, grow and thrive.”
Amani reflects a broader focus on overall health, beyond drug use to ensure comprehensive and compassionate care for black youth and their families.
WECHC said the program continues to provide the same trusted services without being disrupted, enhancing its role as an important resource for the community.
“It’s not just a name change, it reflects our values and the work we do every day,” said Nancy Brockenshire, executive director.
“Equitous access to care means ensuring that Black youth have a safe, culturally affirming space where they feel heard and supported.”
