It was an extraordinary sunny beginning of spring, with parts of the UK that enjoyed temperature over 20c (68F) over the past few days.
But why was it so hot – and why is it about to come to an end?
Extraordinary highs and lows
The recent game of fine weather has been brought to us courtesy of high pressure. But no ordinary high pressure; A blocking highlight – the result of a stratospheric warm -up event.
Ironically, it is the same weather that brought the animal out of the East in 2018.
This time, however, the positioning of the high -pressure system brought almost cloudless air and temperatures far beyond what we would expect at this time of year.

A blocking high -pressure system, unlike ordinary high pressure, is one that runs around much longer – which explains the days and days of blue sky and sunshine.
However, it is noteworthy that the nights were cold.
On Thursday night, Abooyne in Scotland reached a peak of 22.8c (73F) from an overnight minimum of -3,2c (26,2F) -a 26c night -day lift.
And it was not an isolated station – many saw these enormous contradictions between night/daytime temperatures. It is extraordinary.

That high pressure is now slipping away to the nearest continent, which opens the door for more restless conditions of the Atlantic Ocean.
Also from the south, with the weather over Spain and Portugal shockingly bad.
And this is once again down to our long period of fine weather. High -pressure systems will block all incoming weather fronts that have to go somewhere – whether north or south around the peak.
Thus, since the beautiful spring of 2025 makes way for something more, distributed restless conditions from the south courtesy of the low pressure of the Bay of Biscay.
At the same time, Atlantic rain spreads from the west with colder air. The two unite tonight and wipe eastward and lower our daytime temperatures by up to 10c in places.
This is not all punishment and gloom, but the weather of Europe will be ‘troubled’
This is not to say that we will not see the sun to the peak of summer.
We have some bright and sunny sayings, even the next few days, though they look quite restless.
But we will also have classic British sky with cloud in a lesser or lesser extent, and the temperature that fits more with our ordinary spring climate.
Interestingly, the Azores High, which is usually the Southern Europe climate for which we pay expensive air rates, has not yet been determined.
Thus, those who plan a holiday to Spain or Portugal do not have the usual reassurance of hot sunshine. Northern Italy does indeed expect a little heavy rainfall over the next few days.
There is also a fair signal that high pressure will return to the UK in the days after the Easter weekend.
But as conditions remain mobile, it becomes more difficult, restless and short -lived, accurate long -term forecast.
That’s enough to say, the next few days will be cooler, fresher and more restless. With the driest advance on record behind us, rain will undoubtedly be welcome to farmers and gardeners.
