Internet Cookies store the content you search on the website. It is not uncommon to pull up the website and be welcomed by pop-ups to explain that information will be collected or may be collected.

But a website she often visits doesn’t give her this choice, which makes her very upset.
“I’m a consumer of Loblaws, especially the shopper drug market, and I’m the best member of the PC, but when I use their website it doesn’t allow me to opt out of the cookies,” she told us. “I don’t think this is right because it should be my choice whether I want to collect information or not.”
The Loblaws website does have a notification that once you log in, it collects cookies, but instead of dropping or opting out, it provides users with a link to a lengthy company privacy policy.
“When you execute your privacy policy, there are 20 pages of legal jargon, but you can’t opt out, like I think it’ll be there, but they don’t give you the option.”
In response, Lobrous said their cookie practice complies with Canadian privacy laws. A spokesperson also told us: “Customers can delete or disable cookies at any time through their browser.”
Natasha said she did it.
“If you use your phone or computer and you can disable all cookies, you will not be able to access any website. So this is not fair. ”
Far from a decision alone to not offer cookie options, Loblaws is a decision that several other sites follow the same protocol and today. In Canada, there is no law that forces companies to offer consumers such options except Quebec.
“Consent is still needed, but the way they get consent is through implicit consent,” said Toronto Internet Privacy Attorney Mannit Zemel. “This means that when you visit the website, you agree to everything you do when using the website.”
Zemel said the collection of internet cookies helps businesses in a variety of ways, especially when it comes to marketing products.
“Cookies are a very basic tracking of how IP addresses use the site,” she said. “The more data you have, it can help the site understand which products attract users. So they can focus on this information.”
But consumers like Natasha think they should be allowed to opt out.
Zemel agrees.
“The most important thing is that it is still overall data collection. Privacy is still a big problem online, just like any other form of data collection, the fact is that information is still being acquired and used.”
The right to withdraw from the internet cookie collection has been a controversial issue in Canada for years. Currently, Canadian businesses must comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Act (PIPEDA) enacted in April 2000.
“It’s outdated and hasn’t kept pace with the times,” Zemel said. “A lot has changed since 2000 and there is nowhere in this behavior that companies need to give you the option to reject cookies.”
Currently, Quebec is the only province to strengthen Pipeda through its laws.
“The province recently passed privacy legislation, which is more in line with the direction of the world. You have more privacy protections.”
Pipeda, who attempts to strengthen the federal level, has been sitting on the table since the introduction of Bill C-27 in 2022.
It is known as the Digital Charter Implementation Act, which requires organizations to prepare for stricter regulations and increase enforcement.
“But everything seems to be on hold,” Zemel said. “Many of us hope that after the election, they will follow up on everything that comes up.”
Natasha agrees.
“It’s not difficult to give consumers their privacy and choose to click on the cookies they don’t want.”
