Wellington man Matt Carkeek is on a mission to save bad pies.

Working in its free time, Carkeek has developed an application called Mean Pies, where users can classify and upload pies photos, and the idea is taking off throughout the country.

Carkeek told Morning report People were excited about the app and he has had solid followers since launch in early March.

“It’s very difficult. Everyone is very excited about it.

“I just did this in my free time as I work full time.

“I’m still walking away, still trying to improve. It really was really released in early March, but we already have about 300 records and about a thousand downloads.”

Carkeek explained that the app allows users to see all pies in the country and can click on a pies store and will receive instructions.

The app also has some very specific guidelines on how to review pies.

“It’s an app to evaluate pies, put a picture of a fresh pie and then a photo with two bites to show your structural integrity and a little of what is done inside.”

Users can also filter the map through different types of pies so you can search your local area for your favorite variety.

You can also filter the classification search to get the best of the best.

“If you define the really high rating, there will be fewer stores on the map. You will have an average pie.”

As for the top pie of the application so far; Carkeek explained that there are some with 10 in 10, but it was important to remember that everyone has different tastes.

“Obviously, it’s completely subjective, but there is one in Rotorua, there is one in Wellington, there’s a new pies store called Puku Pies, which is right up, everyone seems to be loving it.”

But when it comes to variety, Carkeek shared that there is a clear favorite so far.

“The tart with the highest rating at the moment is a steak pie, cheese and jalapeño. So that’s the new thing, the new craze.”
