A man who performed a mass stabbing in the University of Waterloo gender studies class will have to be longer after the Ontario judge recalculates how much time he has been detained.
Geovanny Villalba-Aleman was sentenced to 11 years in prison last month for Ontario Court Judge Frances Brennan deemed a “specially serious” hate crime against the LGBTQ+ community.
At the time, Brennan said Villalba-Aleman would receive 1,254 days of pre-verdict custody, allowing him to serve in prison for nearly seven years and seven months.
Federal prosecutors confirmed that Brennan corrected what she believed was mathematical errors on Monday, saying he should receive a 941-day credit.
That would give him about eight years and five months of service.
Villalba-Aleman, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of personal injury in the June 2023 attack, which left a professor and two students wounded.
Federal prosecutors believe the attack is equivalent to terrorist activity, but Brennan found evidence that his hatred of the LGBTQ+ community has become an ideology.
According to Canadian law, one of the elements of terrorism is that crimes must be committed for political, religious or ideological purposes.
