London – The US Embassy in Syria has warned all US citizens to leave the country because of the “increased possibility of attacks” during the ID al-Fitt holiday at the end of March, which marks the end of Ramadan in the Muslim world.

The embassy publishes a notice to its website late on Friday, warning citizens of potential attacks on Embassies, International Organizations and Syrian Public Institutions in the Syrian capital Damascus.

“Attack methods may include, but they are not limited to individual attackers, armed artillerymen, or use of explosive devices,” the Embassy’s announcement said. “Leave Syria now,” she added.

The current State Department Travel Council is at level 4 – its highest warning, which means that Americans are advised not to travel to the country for some reason.

Confetti and flowers were dropped by a military helicopter of the crowd during a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the victory of the rebels over the army of Bashar Assad in Idlib, Syria, on March 28, 2025.

“This consultant remains in force because of the significant risks of terrorism, civil excitement, abduction, hostage acceptance, armed conflicts and unjust detention,” the embassy’s latest announcement said.

The US Embassy in Damascus stopped operations in 2012, shortly after the Civil War broke out between the regime of former President Bashar Assad and a Patchwork of the rebel groups. Assad was removed late last year by a collection of opposition forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir Al Sham. HTS leader Ahmed al -Sharaa is now temporarily acting president of Syria.

“The US government is not able to provide any routine or emergency consular services to US citizens in Syria,” the embassy wrote. “The Czech Republic serves as a protective force for the US interests in Syria.”

“US citizens in Syria, who need emergency assistance, must contact the US interest section at the Czech Republic,” she added.
