On Monday, the city council voted unanimously to pass automatic speed enforcement cameras that captured fast-moving vehicles and triggered tickets to plate owners.

“The hardcore evidence is very clear that this type of technology not only reduces the speed of a vehicle collision, but also reduces the severity of the injury.”

Five mobile cameras will be leased and installed in school and community safety areas – areas established by the city council by regulations, drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users are at “increased risk”, an employee reported.

Only two areas in community and school safety areas (using automated speed enforcement under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act) – Acceleration fines double and depend on how much drivers exceed published speed limits.

Windsor currently has about 40 community safety or school areas, but that number is likely to grow as city staff analysis appears to meet streets that enhance traffic law enforcement standards, Simpson said.

According to the experience of other municipalities, the report said: “Staff expect the city to generate enough funds to completely offset the cost of running the program.”

Any annual surplus net income from the program will be transferred to Windsor’s Traffic Calm Reserve Fund, which is used to support improvements in traffic and road safety.
