Ukraine-Russia war latest: Moscow responds to ‘very angry’ Trump while Putin drafts 160,000 men for war

The British, French and Ukrainian military leaders will meet in the coming days to build on ‘real momentum’ in attempts to promote Ukraine’s safety, a spokesman for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

The meeting to send ‘the next phase of detailed planning’ has been agreed upon a call between Sir Keir and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the spokesman said on Monday.

The call came after a ‘coalition of the willing’ of European countries that supported Ukraine in the war against Russia, met last week in Paris and promised to strengthen Kyiv’s army for future safety.

France and Britain at the meeting also tried to expand support for a planned foreign “reassurance power” in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.

“The leaders reflected on their visit to Paris last week and agreed that there is a real momentum to support the long -term safety of Ukraine,” the Prime Minister’s spokesman said.

The Russian president ordered that at least 160,000 men between 18 and 30-year-old be set up in the military this year, even if he is with peace negotiations with Ukraine and the US.

“To perform the duty of service for military service of Russian citizens between 18 and 30 years who are not in the reserve and are subject to military service service, amounting to 160,000 people, from 1 April to 15 July 2025,” said the decision, quoted by Tass.

Last year, spring service duty was expanded to 150,000, in 2023 – to 147,000 and in 2022 –134 500.

Donald Trump suggested that he be able to impose secondary rates of 25-50 percent on buyers of Russian oil if Vladimir Putin does not work together on ceasefire.

“I want to see him make an agreement so that we prevent Russian soldiers and Ukrainian soldiers and other people from being killed,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “I want to make sure he follows it, and I think he’ll do it.”

“If Russia and I are unable to make an agreement to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault … I’m going to put secondary rates on oil, on all russia oil,” Trump told NBC.

“It would be that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States,” he said. “There will be a 25 percent rate on all oil, a rate of 25 to 50 points on all oil.”

Oil prices were changed yesterday when traders tried to work out how the threat of Mr. Trump of secondary rates against the world’s second largest oil exporter may look like.

China and India buy about 80 percent of Russian crude exports. Chinese traders said they were not by the threat, while Beijing said that the cooperation with Russia was not directed or affected against third parties.

The Kremlin offered to arrange another call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump after the US president said he was “pissed” with Russia.

Mr. Trump told NBC News he was very angry after the Russian leader criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the US president suggested that he be able to impose secondary rates of 25-50 percent on Russian oil buyers.

Mr. Trump later repeated to reporters that he was disappointed with Mr. Putin, but added: “I think we make step by step progress.”

On a question about the remarks of Mr. Kremlin spokeswoman Trump said Moscow spokeswoman Dmitri Peskov continues to work with Washington and that Mr. Putin was open for contact with Mr. Trump.

“We continue to work with the US side, firstly to build our bilateral relations, which is badly damaged during the previous (US) administration,” Mr. Peskov said.

“And we are also working on the implementation of some ideas associated with the Ukrainian settlement. This work is going on, but so far there are no details we can or should tell you. It is a time -consuming process, probably because of its complexity.”

A call between both the presidents, he said, can be arranged if necessary on short notice, although none of this week is scheduled.
