Two people died in separate car accidents in North Canterbury on Tuesday.
Emergency services responded for the first time to an accident of two vehicles on the state highway 7 shortly after 3 pm.
One person died at the scene, while two others were taken to Christchurch hospital with serious, moderate injuries, St. John said.
The road, which crosses Lewis Pass, was closed between Culverden and Balmoral with in force.
Emergency services responded to another serious accident in the region.
A single vehicle accident on the state highway 1, near Leithfield, happened around 5:15 pm.
One person has since died.
The State Highway 1 is open, however, the mays Road entrance is closed while the serious collision unit examines the scene.
Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
