Donald Trump is now looking for the punishment of the Wilmerhale attorney firm, which is the same company where Robert Mueller worked before adopting the role of special advocates to investigate the president’s ties with Russia.
As he did to other law firms who acted against him, Trump’s latest executive order killed all the contracts that Wilmerhale held to the government and suspended the safety clearances of his employees, according to the New York Times.
His order also prohibits Wilmerhale employees to enter federal buildings, communicate with federal workers and be rented in government agencies.
Other law firms Trump has targeted executive order strips – such as Paul, Weiss, Wharton, Rifkind & Garrison – chose to conclude an agreement with the president to do unpaid work for him to avoid the restrictions.
Trump’s order makes it clear that it was partly issued as a response to Mueller’s investigation, which he calls “one of the most partisan investigations in American history.”
Muller resigned from his position in Wilmerhale to lead the investigation after Trump’s Deputy Attorney General appointed him as a special advocate in the investigation. He retired from the law firm in 2021.
“Wilmerhale rewarded Robert Mueller and his colleagues,” the order reads, adding that “Mueller’s investigation shows the weapons of the government, but still Wilmerhale claims to” embody the highest value of our firm and profession. “
In addition to being the history of Mueller at the firm, Trump’s order also complains about the firm’s diversity efforts and its representation of clients suing the Trump administration over, among other things, transgender rights and immigration issues.
Wilmerhale said in a statement that he plans to pursue “all appropriate drugs to this illegal order”.
On Friday, Wilmerhale and Jenner & Bock – another law firm Trump, which was targeted in his executive order with ties with Mueller – filed lawsuits that oppose Trump’s order.
They are the second and third law firms who sue Trump over his criminal order. Perkins Cole was the first, and the lawsuit led to a temporary block of Trump’s order.
Attorneys representing Jenner & Bock argued in their lawsuit that Trump’s order was unconstitutional and that they were meant to “refrigerate” their work.
“These attempts to undermine the lawyer-customer relationship to undermine the lawyer-client relationship, to undermine protected speech that harms the administration’s policy agenda, and to punish citizens for their associations, are incompatible with the Constitution,” attorneys representing the firm said in the court conservation.
The lawsuit of Wilmerhale claims that Trump’s order “will inevitably cause extensive, lasting damage to Wilmerhale’s current and future business prospects” and the ability to represent clients who want its services, according to filing.
It also notes that Trump’s order is solely a punishment for the firm’s ties with Mueller.
“Although most litigation discovery requires to discover retaliation motive, the order makes no secret of its intention to punish Wilmerhale for the past and the current representations of clients before the courts of the country and for the perceived connection to the view that Mr. Mueller expressed as a special advocate,” the filing said.
