The UK’s medicine supply could be disrupted by the rates imposed by Donald Trump, the health secretary warned and said cabinet ministers were doing their best to reduce the effects of an ‘extremely volatile and turbulent’ situation.
This comes after the US president said he was not looking for the rates that plunged world markets to unrest.
Wes Streeting said there are a “number of factors going on” when it comes to the UK’s offer of medicine, including manufacturing and distribution challenges, but warned that rates pose “another layer of challenge”.
The health secretary spoke to Sky News: ‘We are watching this situation very closely. We work daily to make sure we provide the medicine that this country needs.
‘Where we do see disruptions to provide, we also take steps at the end of the recipes to show the flexibility needed to make sure people have access to the prescriptions they need.
“But whether it is medicine, whether it is parts for manufacturing, whether it is global trade, it is more commonly an extremely volatile and turbulent background for the country, and therefore the prime minister, the trade secretary, is the entire cabinet focused on it and makes us take the steps that must protect at home to protect British industries and the public services of Britain.”
The trade tax that Mr. Trump imposed on most countries led to the value of US shares that dropped sharply when markets opened on Monday, after Val in London and in Europe and Asia earlier.
The British government is currently trying to negotiate an agreement that would release the British industry from the livestock tariffs, with Downing Street saying that the talks are at an ‘advanced stage’.
