When Trump defines his agenda tonight, expect almost every Republican in the House of the House to give him a standing ovation. The flourishing of the anti-hut Republicans is over because most of Trump’s internal critics from his first term are no longer in the congress.
Of the 293 Republican members of the Chamber and the Senate on January 20, 2017, only 121 (or 41%) are still in the congress. Some of those who left have done this for normal reasons, such as loss of re -election or retirement due to old age. But many of them retired because they did not like the direction the party was heading under Trump. And others, like those who voted for Impeach Trump, lost in primer because Trump approved one of their competitors.
This size of turnover was unprecedented. According to data collected by Bullotpedia and 538, more members of the President Party left the Chamber in 2017-2020 than during the first term of every president in the last 60 years.
And the Republicans who left the congress during the Trump era were more measured than their replacements. DW -nominate is an indicator that quantifies the ideology of congressional members using their voting records, placing them in a scale of 1 (most conservative) to -1 (most liberal). The average evaluation of the 172 DW-nominated members is 0.480, but the average result of 118 Republicans elected in the Congress from 2017 to 2023 is 0.544.
In other words, Trump was able to turn Republicans into a congress into a more conservative unit, which is less likely to stand on the road.
