One of the most notorious gang figures in Australia will be released on bail after almost two decades in prison.
Tony Mokbel, 59, arrived at the Court on Friday morning from the prison in a armored vehicle in Bearcat, with dozens of police surrounding the doors when he was escorted to the court.
He smiled, patted his lawyer on his shoulder and spoke briefly with his legal team before the decision was transmitted.
Three judges of the Court of Appeals decided that it should be released after requesting bail earlier this week while fighting to cancel the remaining drug trafficking sentences in a long -awaited appeal of lawyer X.
Judge Karin Emeton, president of the Court, said: “As was mandatory, Mokbel has established that his circumstances are really exceptional.”
“It has a very strong case that its convictions must be annulled,” he said.

Mokbel had been imprisoned since his arrest in 2007 in Greece, after he escaped on a yacht while he was released on bail with a guarantee of $ 1 million of his sister -in -law Renate.
His sister, Gawy Saad, offered $ 850,000 in guarantee to ensure Mokbel’s bond and said “sure he will not do it to anyone else” when asked about what happened to his sister -in -law.
