Monday morning marks the beginning of free traffic on the bridge across the Harbour of Halifax.
During the provincial elections last fall, the ruling progressive conservatives promised to remove tolls that had been implemented since Angus L. MacDonald Bridge 70 years ago.
The MacDonald Bridge is closed on weekends, so staff can start demolishing toll stations and concrete barriers.

On March 3, the Secretary of Public Works announced that the toll would be two weeks ahead of the initial plan as of 5 a.m. Monday.
Minister Fred Tilley said the move is good news for commuters and will make the crossover between Dartmouth and Halifax smoother and more affordable.
The bridge makes the driver pay $1.25 in cash and comes with a MACPASS account and a transponder for $1 per crossover.
The Port Halifax Bridge, which operates and maintains the two bridges, said 200,000 MacPass account owners will receive a refund in the coming weeks.
