The annual sunshine list of civil servants who received $100,000 or more in 2024 was released Friday.
The catalog discloses the names and titles of high-income workers in the provincial government, schools, hospitals, police and other areas of the public sector, up 25% from 300,680 in 2023 to a record 377,666 in 2024.
The top three people on this year’s list are employees of Ontario Power Generation Corporation (OPG), with the highest income being president and CEO Ken Hartwick, who earns over $2 million.
Former Metrolinx CEO Phil Derster, who earns over $883,000, ranks fourth on the list, and current UnitedHealth CEO Kevin Smith ranked fifth with a salary slightly lower than the version, at about $883,000.
“Nearly half of the list is driven by the school board, driven by the school board department, and teachers contributed 87% of this growth,” Finance Committee Chairman Caroline Mulroney said in a statement.
She explained: “The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act of 1996 requires that organizations that receive public funds from Ontario be disclosed, and that on March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees were paid $100,000 or more during the previous calendar year.”
