Theives in Guelph make off with $2K worth of butter from grocers

“Butter remains a popular commodity for thieves in Guelph,” local police said. They reported two latest thefts in small southwestern Ontario cities, 70 kilometers west of downtown Toronto, It happened in mid-October.

Another incident in early November took place in Brantford, according to Brantford examiners. Brantford police have asked the public to help identify two suspects suspected of stealing $1,200 worth of butter.

Guelph police claimed that on October 12, two men were at a business in Speedvale Avenue East respectively before meeting indoors. They then put three boxes of butter into the cart for $936 and escaped through the receiving door.

Four days later, theft was similar. Police said the two males entered a business on Eramosa Road each before meeting indoors. They put four boxes of butter into their cart, worth $958 and left via emergency exit.

Police said Guelph reported today in Guelph that “at least seven large-scale butter thefts” in Guelph.

In Guelph’s case, police described the alleged culprit as a brown-skinned male, about 40 years old, 5’7 inches tall, with medium purpose.

Police described one of the suspects in the first theft as wearing a black-sleeved vest and a blue and white baseball cap, while the second was wearing a dark winter jacket and a red baseball cap.

In the second incident, one of the men was described as wearing a tan jacket, black pants and a black winter hat. The other was wearing a black jacket, black pants and a black baseball cap.

Previous butter theft

The rash in the butter theft dates back to August 2023, when the thieves targeted two Guelph businesses.

Police said a man walked out of a store on Gordon Street and Claire Road in Galf, two boxes of butter worth about $500.

An hour later, a man walked out of a store in Korright Road West and Edinburgh Road South with $300 worth of butter. Police said he left a white Toyota Corolla for the last time. The police did not say it was the same person.

In addition to the Guelph area, Peel area police said they arrested three Brampton men worth more than $1,000 in sneaky butter, according to CTV Kitchener.

Police accused the men of being believed to have placed a box of butter in a shopping cart, walked out of the store and drove away.

But an hour later, police found the car outside another grocery store. When they left the business, they arrested two men, and a third person when he left the business. Police said a third person abandoned a shopping cart outside the store where they found the stolen butter.

Overall, police recovered 144 butter and 17 containers of ghee from the robbery (a kind of clarified butter that originated from the Indian subcontinent).

Police told CBC News that most butter ends up being on the black market or being sold as a resale site.

Some Guelph residents responded humorously to the wave of butter crime.

“They have to have a recipe,” one person told the CBC, the latest theft that took place outside the grocery store.
