A strong earthquake hit Mianmar Central on Friday, and people went out of panic buildings in Yangon and also in Bangcoc, the capital of neighboring Thailand, witnesses said.

United States Geological Research (USGS) said the earthquake was of magnitude 7.7 and at a depth of 10 km. It was followed by a powerful tremor after the tremor.

The epicenter was about 17.2 km from the city of Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.2 million, according to USGS.

There was no immediate word of Myanmar about damage.

An officer from the Mianmar Fire Department told Reuters: “We have started searching and we have been Yangon to see if there are victims and damage. So far, we have no information yet.”

Mandalay’s social media posts showed collapsed buildings and debris scattered across the streets. Reuters could not immediately check the posts.

Witnesses contacted in Yangon said many people left buildings in the city, the largest in the country.

Witnesses in Bangcoc said people took to panic streets, many of them invited from bathrobes and swimming clothes.
