One person died after being hit by cargo train on a pedestrian passage in Wancargill near Elles RD.

Police said they were called to the scene near Turnbull Thomson Park at 5:20 pm and found a dead person.

“A scene exam was performed and police and Kiwirail are working to clean the scene,” said a police door.

Police were working to identify the person who died, they said.

St. John said they sent an ambulance, operations manager and a quick response unit for the scene.

Elles RD is closed between Tweed and Fort ST while emergency services attend.

Kiwirail said the person was hit in the Ness St Crossing, which had a maze of pedestrians and signaling.

They also confirmed that the train was just carrying coal at the time and the train driver is receiving support.

This marked the second time in a week that a pedestrian died after being hit by a train.

Last Wednesday, 13-year-old Sarie Morton died after being hit by a train near Matamata College.

His death was being investigated by the police.
