“Clumsiness and disgust”: Canada’s auto capital and Trump tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump’s long-awaited tariff announcement on Wednesday sparked confusion and attention from Canadian auto capital.
The president offers Canada some relief in the White House address of the long rose garden, excluding it from the list of countries facing new reciprocity tariffs
However, the Trump administration is maintaining previously announced tariffs that affect Canada, which include a levy of up to 25% on assembled vehicles and some auto parts.
“I was shocked and disgusted at the same time because we were talking about people’s livelihoods,” said John D’Agnolo, president of Unifor Local 200.
Nearly 2,000 members of D’Agnolo built Ford’s V8 engines that were shipped to the United States to put them in trucks and Mustangs.
The White House said that starting this week, the engine is one of the “key auto parts.” However, parts that comply with the Canadian National-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) were invaluable until the government “established a procedure to apply tariffs to its non-U.S. content.” Read more
Amazon is selling products that call Canada the 51st state, and many Canadians are upset

U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of turning Canada into the 51st state hits virtual shelves of online retail giant Amazon – Canadian Fusion Canadians called on the company to shut it down.
A petition urges Amazon to ban lists of shirts, hats, stickers and other products that are famously known as Canada, or the 51st state, or otherwise celebrate the idea that Canada was annexed by its southern neighbors.
“This is not a joke for us. It is a threat to our autonomy and identity as Canadians,” Ontario resident Sue Williams-Dunn, who began the petition in February.
As of Thursday afternoon, the petition had more than 64,000 signatures.
A quick search for “State 51” on Amazon’s website brought a large number of items, including “T-shirts that make Canada great again” to mention Trump’s slogan, with stickers on the Canadian map with American flag and hats, announcing Canada to declare Canada the “51st state in the United States.”
“This is offensive, meaningful objection and war. I will not buy products from Amazon right away,” one commenter wrote under the petition.
The emergence of seizing Canadian products for the United States is just the latest front in the ongoing trade war between the two countries, a painful tariff and anti-election campaign that has inspired many Canadians to accept the “Canadians”.
Amazon said in an email to CBC News that the related products did not violate its policies. Read more
The consumer carbon tax has disappeared. What does this mean for your wallet?

This is official – the consumer carbon tax has ended.
Mark Carney canceled the fee on his first day as prime minister last month, signing a directive to remove fuel fees on April 1. Taxed the sales price of carbon emission products that have been added to the fuel type. For gasoline, 17.6 cents per liter and 15.25 cents per cubic meter of natural gas. (Canada uses about 2,500 cubic meters of natural gas per year on average.)
Carney initially supported the carbon tax but turned around while running for the Liberal leadership, saying it became too “divisible”. Although carbon consumer prices have disappeared, industrial prices for large-scale polluters remain.
The Liberal government under Justin Trudeau first proposed taxes in 2019 to inspire Canadians to transition to greener energy. But even in the early days, the policy faced opposition from the provincial government, and conservative leader Pierre Poilievre promised a “axe tax” to become a central part of his platform.
In all provinces except Quebec, the federal carbon price for consumers disappeared on Tuesday, and the federal price in Quebec is not applicable. British Columbia also has its own consumption carbon tax, but as of now, the province’s carbon prices have also been rising.
Now that the tax has disappeared, how will this affect your wallet? Experts say the cost savings will be saved to consumers almost immediately, but the loss of carbon discounts will also affect further. Read more
