A Swedish man was convicted of flying a drone under influence.
He was fined 32,000 Kronor ($6,440) during Classic Car Week in Rättvik, a small northwestern neighborhood in Stockholm.
Karin Hellmont, the president of the district court who sentenced the man, explained that the fine imposed was equivalent to being drunk when driving. “It’s an airplane, even if it flies on its own.

An unidentified drone operator dropped paint on the ground of the Russian Embassy in Stockholm in November 2024, although no arrests were made under such circumstances.
This is the first incident in Sweden, involving a person arrested for flying a drone under the influence. However, Sweden also has drone-related arrests for other reasons. For example, a man was arrested in January 2022 at the residence of Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia near Stockholm.
Sweden has strict regulations on the use of drones near sensitive locations, including the Royal Palace. Flying drones in restricted areas such as nuclear power plants, prisons, nature reserves, and military areas is prohibited.
Drone flights within 5 kilometers of the palace are not allowed without explicit permission.
In January 2022, reports of unauthorized drone sightings on nuclear facilities and the palace sparked fear and prompted Swedish authorities to investigate.
The Swedish Security Agency investigated the flights of drones on nuclear power plants and other critical infrastructure, deeming them potentially interfering with secret information.

General drone regulations in Sweden include:
- The maximum flight altitude is 120 meters above the ground.
- The drone must fly within visual range (500 meters).
- The operator must maintain a reasonable distance from people and animals.
- It must be just a daytime flight.
Unauthorized drone operations in restricted areas such as nuclear power plants such as restricted areas (such as military areas) can result in fines. Violations can also lead to legal consequences, such as restrictions on drone permits or depend on the severity of the violation.
Swedish transport agencies require special permissions to fly in restricted airspace. The drone operator must have a valid operator ID and a drone license weighing 250 grams.
