SIU investigating Windsor police cruiser crash that injured cyclist

Ontario police regulator launched an investigation Sunday after a bicycle rider was seriously injured in a collision with a Windsor police cruiser.

According to the Special Investigation Department, the collision occurred at 1:40 p.m. on April 6 at the intersection of Glengarry Avenue and Assumption Street near downtown Windsor. Patrol personnel were dispatched to the phone, on the way.

The 46-year-old cyclist was taken to the hospital for serious but lifeless injuries, SIU said in a press release.

A spokesperson for the Windsor Police Department in an email statement to the Star Monday afternoon It was confirmed that SIU is leading the investigation and forwarded all other issues to the provincial police oversight agency.

SIU said it has assigned a team of three investigators, forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to investigate the case.

The Ontario Special Investigation Unit is a long-term agency that investigates reports of sexual assault, death or serious injury involving police officers.
