Salman Rushdie releases a new story collection with the title The eleventh hourIt will examine themes “that many were” on his mind, including deaths, anger and peace.
The publication is the first fiction work of the Booker Prize winner since he was stabbed in New York in August 2022 while writing his 2023 novel, Victory Citybefore the incident.
Attacks on Rushdie have been feared since the late 1980s after his novel The satanic verses was declared blasphemous by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Rushdie said of the work: “The three short stories in this volume, all written in the last twelve months, explore themes and places that have been a lot in my mind – deaths, Bombay, farewell, England (especially Cambridge), anger, peace, America. And Goya and Bosch.”

He continued: ‘I am glad that the stories, very different from each other in the institution, story and technique, nevertheless succeed in talking to each other, and with the two stories that serve as a prologue and epilogue to this trio.
“I considered the quintet as a single job, and I hope readers can see and enjoy it in the same way,” the author said.
Rushdie’s new fiction collection will be published on November 4 in Hardback by Jonathan Cape, an impression of Penguin Vintage.
