Rory McIlroy ‘honoured, thrilled and proud’ to call himself Masters champion

An emotional Rory McIlroy fought back tears as he thought about winning the masters to complete the Grand Slam career.

McIlroy threatened to play a five -hole lead with eight holes before beating Justin Rose with a bird at the first extra hole on Augusta National.

“It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here and I began to wonder if it would ever be my time, ‘McIlroy said before hosting the Green Jacket through defending champion Scottie Scheffler.

“The last ten years that came here with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulder and try to achieve it, I wonder what we’re going to talk about next year.

“I’m absolutely honored, excited and proud to call myself a master mushroom.”

McIlroy sank to his knees to his knees after he reached the winning Putt, adding: ‘It was 14 years in making a four-stroke lead (after three rounds) in 2011.

“There were a lot of pent -up emotions that came out on the 18th green, and a moment as it makes all these years and worth close calls.”

McIlroy had to fight back tears when asked about the sacrifices his parents made and made in the early part of his career.

“I want to say hello to my mom and dad, they are back in Northern Ireland and I can’t wait to celebrate with them the next week,” McIlroy added.

McIlroy’s fourth bird of the day on the 10th gave him a five -stroke lead, but he unexplained to 13th in Rae’s creek to run a second double bogey of the day and also dropped a shot on the 14th to open the door to the chase.

“When I hit the wedge in the creek at 13, I felt that I had done a very good job to jump out of it as well and the double at first,” McIlroy said.

“I was really nervous to go out and almost the double on the first time calmed me down and brought me into it. The way I responded to setbacks all week, I couldn’t be more proud of myself.

“I had two meters less in the playoffs than regulation and also a flatter lie. It was a good number, just needed a dedicated swing and made one at the right time. ‘
