Rāhui placed in Tongariro Alpine Crossing after death

A Rāhui was placed on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on North Central Island, after a person died on Saturday at the mountain walking track.

At about 12 noon, a 50 -year -old man collapsed as he crossed the crossing of Tongariro – efforts to resurrect the man were unsuccessful and died shortly thereafter.

Under the guidance and tikanga of Ngāti Hikairo Ki Tongariro, a karakia occurred alongside the man’s family member and all who helped.

The conservation department said that Rāhui, which is a sign of respect for the person’s whIONUU, will last three days and will be raised at 6am on Wednesday.

Walkers in the area are being asked to use alternative tracks during Rāhui.

Public members should consider alternative walking routes during this period.

The death of the man will be sent to the coroner.
