Floods twice the size of Victoria have flooded parts of Inland Queensland, with more expected rain.
It is considered the worst flood seen in the region in more than 50 years, which causes fears of widespread livestock losses.
But water levels have begun to go back in many areas, providing the hope that the worst has happened.
‘Too much water’
In Thargomindah, the population of the city of more than 200 people moved to a higher land after the waters of the floods violated a dike, eclipseing the record levels of 1974 when reaching 7.5 million on Tuesday.
The helicopter pilots have remained occupied since then, delivering food and rescuing cattle when they are not achieving other evacuations amid generalized floods.
The locals were warned that water levels could increase again with the remains of the former tropical cyclone Dianne bringing more rain.
The heaviest falls will arrive in the south of Queensland and north of NSW on Wednesday, with total of more than 100 mm in some areas.
The cut communities
“We are talking about isolation potentially for six to 10 weeks for some of those communities.” The NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing told reporters.
“The significant rain in Queensland makes its way slowly through the basin and moves through the west of Nueva de del Sur.”
“I couldn’t praise the community enough. Everyone has joined,” he said.
Last forecast
The rain is expected to relieve the interior areas affected by floods on Wednesday night, according to the latest forecast of the Meteorology Office published Wednesday morning.
It is predicting a great possibility of showers for Thargomindah and the surrounding area of Channel County, with the possibility of thunderstorms.
Dry air is expected to move through the region in the next few days, which could help eliminate rain.
Several flood warnings remain in place today throughout the region.
