An unusual convoy approached the lush border of Argentina at Brazil on Tuesday, after hurling through traffic belted roads for hours. Within the specialized iron crate tied to a truck and flanked by wagons full of carers and veterinarians, was a female elephant in Africa.
She is on her way to a better life after spending more than 30 years in captivity as the last elephant of a Buenos Aires animal garden often criticized for his circumstances before it was turned into a conservationist nine years ago.
Ordinary (outspoken Pooh ‘-Pee in Spanish) started on her difficult 2,700 kilometers (1.670 miles) on Monday, from the trendy neighborhood of Palermo in the capital of Buenos in Argentina in the Amazon rainforest of the Mato Grosso State in Brazil.
The 3.5-ton pachyder is expected to arrive at her new home in Elephant Sanctuary Brazil later this week, the first haven for elephants in Latin America, a trip dependent on traffic, weather conditions and customs.
From late Tuesday, Pupy traversed the drowned Northern Argentine province of Misciones, near the Brazil border.
Stand upright in her crate during the rough journey, sleep and feed on vegetables, fruits, grass and vitamin supplements. The Brazilian park staff and Argentine handlers monitor her condition during pre -scheduled breaks and through cameras in the crate.
It took months to prepare well for so many hours of incarceration.
“She makes the trip flawless,” said María José Catanzariti, a veterinarian and operations manager of the Buenos Aires Preserve. “Sometimes these animals do not want to eat in the first 24 hours, but the excellent keep on.”
Pupy is just the latest in a series of over 1,000 wildlife – elephants, as well as lions, tigers, bears and monkeys – who have sent the Buenos Aires “Ecopark” abroad to shrines since the conversion of a 2016 city conservation site.
The animals are free of incarceration, and build new lives in greener pastures. In 2019, an orangutan named Sandra traded its limited, lonely existence in the Argentine preserve for more wandering space and 22 new friends of her own species in the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida.
Five Asian elephants who enjoy all the Brazil elephant sanctuary are all five Asian elephants -including Mara, a former circus elephant who also ended up in the Argentine Preserve fence and five years ago, where she has now delayed at least 10 kilometers (6 miles) per day.
