Pince Andrew’s reputation, according to his senior assistant, was “irreparable” to his Newnight interview.
Dominic Hampshire’s remark was released as part of his testimony to a tribunal on an alleged Chinese spy, Yang Tengbo, which was excluded from the United Kingdom in March 2023 on national security grounds.
Mr Hampshire, who worked with the Duke of York until he left the royal household in 2022, gave a witness statement to the Special Immigration Appeal Commission.
He said: “After the Newsnight interview and the next few months it was clear that the reputation of the Duke was irreparable.
“It was a general feeling in the royal household, despite what the Duke thought.
“It was very clear in the royal household that we would have to look at the options for the Duke’s future of royal duties.”
In a separate statement released on Friday, Mr. Hampshire said: “The palace was kept informed of all my commercial efforts on behalf of the Duke of York, and the full disclosure of all communication with Mr Yang, the Hampton group and China were offered to Buckingham Palace and the intelligence services.
“I am now a private businessman and none of my business interests are linked to any member of the royal family.”
