Parts of Taranaki, Waikato and Auckland could be hit by weird storms tonight, while a bass moves from the Tasmania Sea.

Metservice says there is a high risk of weird storms tonight to Taranaki, Waitomo, Western Waikato and the heads of Manukau.

“These storms can bring heavy rains located with intensities of 10 to 20 mm per hour and hail of 5 to 15 mm in diameter. Strong wind gusts from 90 to 110 km/h are possible and there is a low risk that some of these storms would be severe with the gusts above 110 km/he a chance of small tornadoes

There is a moderate risk of storms for the rest of Auckland, southern northern, the Coromandel peninsula, the East of Waikato and the Plenty East to Whakatane bay.

In a Facebook post, Auckland Emergency Management said that while the system is expected to move quickly, it can bring isolated rains that can cause superficial floods.

“It’s hard to identify exactly which areas can be affected, so it’s important that everyone keeps an eye on the latest climate updates from Metservice New Zealand and make sensible decisions.”
