Avalon Airshow viewers were stunned when the plane lost control and collided with the asphalt during a demonstration on Friday afternoon.
Police confirmed that the aircraft pilot, who was the only occupant, suffered serious injuries.
“The incident occurred at a significant distance from viewers and there were no reports of injuries,” Victoria police said in a statement.
“The exact circumstance around the accident has not yet been determined.”
It was expected that almost 250,000 viewers would work through the airport gates, between Melbourne and Geelong, for the Biennial Air Show from Friday to Sunday.
It is believed that the accident occurred during a solo aerobic screen, hosted by an NSW event management company.
It featured Wolf Pitts Pro, an aircraft with a top speed of 414kmh and the ability to withstand large G -forces.
Airshow and other emergency services were contacted to comment.
