Phil Mickelson believes he can still challenge a fourth Masters title, despite having a rare missed cut on Augusta National.
Mickelson had great expectations to expand his own record as the oldest big champion after finishing sixth in Liv Golf Miami on the difficult ‘Blue Monster’ track at Doral last week.
However, the 54-year-old man was only able to return scores of 75 and 74 to miss the cut by three shots in his last three holes-and to make an early exit for just the fourth time in 32 appearances.
Asked if he had great expectations this week, Mickelson – who won the US PGA Championship in 2021, just a month of his 51st birthday: ‘I did, yes.
“I really thought I was going to play well and get in it. I didn’t miss many cuts here and I’m surprised that I missed one this year because I played very well.
“I played good golf this year, and I’m disappointed with my score this week. I’ll get here again soon.
“It felt like it was a good week, a great opportunity for me, and unfortunately I didn’t record. It is disappointing because I felt that I was playing well enough to be in hunting at least.
“I had a lot of fun. I wish I played better. I thought it was wonderful. I thought it was playing nice, a big challenge, hard. These are the masters; I like everything to it. ‘
Former champion Dustin Johnson also made an early exit after a nightmare end point to his second round, the winner of 2020 dropped a shot on the 17th and then stopped a double Bogey on the last time to miss the cut with one.
“I play better than I probably recorded,” Johnson said. ‘Tough finish there. Played fairly solid all day until the last two holes.
‘Just have to stay with it. Golf is a funny game. You play the same round and shoot four or five below, or as I do today, one shoots one.
“You know, just a few wells here and there fall and give you a little momentum, a little confidence, it’s another day. The game is in good shape. Just have to limit the errors. ‘
