Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel laureate and a giant of Latin American letters for many decades, died, his son said on Sunday. He was 89.
“It is with deep sadness that we sign up that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, died peacefully in Lima today, surrounded by his family,” read a letter signed by his children álvaro, Gonzalo and Morgana, and placed by Álvaro on X.
The letter states that his surplus will be cremated and that there will be no public ceremony.
“His departure will grieve his family, his friends and his readers around the world, but we hope that they will comfort us, in the fact that he enjoys a long, adventurous and fruitful life, leaving a body of work that will survive him,” they added.
He was author of such celebrated novels such as “The Time of the Hero” (La Ciudad Y Los Perros) and “Feast of the Bok.”
Vargas Llosa, a productive novelist and essayist and winner of numerous prizes, awarded the Nobel in 2010 after being considered a contender for years.
