Peru will hold general elections in a year in an effort to end years of instability, says President Dina Boluarte.
The deeply unpopular bowl said that the surveys of April 2026 would choose a new president, 130 deputies and 60 senators.
The bicameral electoral system has not been used since the early 1990s.
In a brief television speech nationwide, Boluarte did not say if it would be a contender.
Boluarte assumed power in Peru in 2022 to complete the term of then President Pedro Castillo, who was withdrawn from office only two years in his period of five years after trying to dissolve the legislature to avoid his own elimination.
She said the elections would be “democratic, clean, transparent and orderly.”
Boluarte has a 93 percent disapproval index, according to a national survey conducted by Datum International in March.
Its term ends on July 28, 2026.
Last week, the Congress of Peru voted to eliminate the Minister of the Interior of the position after deciding that he had not properly handled the growing violent crime in the Andean country.
Public outrage has increased due to an increase in murders and other violence, especially the recent murder of Paul Flores, the 39 -year -old main singer of the Cumbia Banda Armonia 10.
They triggered him fatally when the assailants attacked the tourist bus of his band after a concert in Lima.
In reaction to the murder of Flores, Boluarte on March 19 declared an emergency state in the capital and ordered the deployment of soldiers to help the police address the increase in violence.
That same day, opposition politicians requested a vote of distrust against the Minister of the Interior.
The Boluarte government had previously decreed an emergency state from September to December in an attempt to stop violence.
The authorities reported 2057 murders in 2024, compared to 1506 in 2023.
