One person was poisoned by bacteria after swimming in a Canterbury infested lake.
Last week, it now issued to the toxic blue algae in Lake Hood last week near Ashburton.
National Public Health Service expert Dr. Claire Salter said the person was exposed to bacteria before the warning was issued.
Symptoms may not appear for a while until after contact with water, she said.
“Toxins released by cyanobacteria can trigger hay asthma and fever symptoms, rash, stomach disorders and neurological effects such as tingling around the mouth, headaches, breathing difficulties and visual problems.”
The lake was tested weekly by the Canterbury Regional Council, but concentrations may change due to wind or hot climate.
Council and Board Land Science Manager Draine Moriarty said the bacteria were commonly found in Canterbury’s lakes, especially during summer and autumn.
