People of Greenland ‘do not want to be Americans’, PM says

Greenland’s prime minister Mute Egede said Wednesday that the people of Greenland will determine their own future and do not want to be Danes or American.

Egede made his comments to the American president Donald Trump, who reiterated on Tuesday his desire to make Greenland, currently a semi -autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark, part of the United States.

“We do not want to be Americans, or Danish, we are Kalallit (GroenlandĂ©s). Americans and their leader must understand that,” Egede said in a Facebook post.

“We are not on sale and we cannot be taken. Our future is determined by us in Greenland,” he added.

The Groenland government is currently in a period of caregiver prior to a scheduled election for March 11. The campaign focuses mainly on the aspirations of independence of the island in the light of Trump’s interest.

Denmark Foreign Minister said Wednesday that it was significant that Trump had recognized the right of Greenland to self -determination in his speech to Congress.

Opinion surveys suggest that most of Groundland are opposed to join the United States, although most favors the eventual independence of Denmark. The Danish government has said that Arctic island must decide its own future and is not for sale.

“(Trump) said (they) respect the right to self -determination of Greenland, and that I think it was the most important part of that speech,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Wednesday at a press conference in Helsinki.
