WASHINGTON (AP) – The Pentagon’s acting inspector general announced Thursday that he will review defense secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of signal messaging apps to communicate plans for military strikes against Yemen’s Hotti militants.
The review will also examine the use of publicly available encrypted applications by other defense officials, which cannot process confidential materials and is not part of the Department of Defense secure communications network.
Hergers’ use of the application emerged when National Security Adviser Mike Waltz added Jeffrey Goldberg, a journalist from journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, to the signal text chain. The chain includes Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the National Intelligence Agency Tulsi Gabbard and others gathered to discuss military operations against Iran-backed Houthis.
“The purpose of this assessment is to determine the use procedures for the Secretary of Defense and other Department of Defense personnel to comply with the Department of Defense policies and procedures,” Acting agent Steven Sepbins said in a notice letter to Hegseth.
