Toronto – Ontario will spend $35 million to help Shaw Festival rebuild the Royal George Theatre.
Tourism Minister Stan Cho said the funding would be used to build larger, more modern theaters as the province hopes to strengthen the economy of the Niagara and surrounding areas.
The province said the construction of the theater will create 550 jobs and once built, the site will add 20% seating as well as new rehearsal and work space.
The Royal George Theatre will be permanently closed later this year, with the reconstruction expected to be completed in 2029.
Cho hopes that a larger venue will help more tourists travel to the area and keep it for longer.
Cho has grand visions that bring the Niagara region to international airports, more hotels, mass transport expansion and new amusement parks.
