A Toronto man shot and killed Peter Khan, a stranger who robbed the King chain, and was sentenced to life imprisonment for a period of unqualified parole.
After a jury trial, 30-year-old Jahvon Waldron was convicted of second-degree murder on November 6, 2024. On Friday, Supreme Court Judge Brian O’Marra sentenced him to the sentence.
Waldron was also sentenced to 10 years in prison and was also sentenced to charges for stealing the gold chain and shooting.
Second-degree murder is automatic life imprisonment. The problem O’Marra has to decide is that parole is not qualified for a period of time between 10 and 25 years.
Assistant Crown Attorney Paul Kelly filed his opinion last month saying that the parole will be 20 to 25 years, while defense attorney Brian Crothers said the more appropriate period would be 12 to 15 years.
It was May 7, 2022, when Waldron, 28, fatally shot Khan, 36, in the lounge outside the Tropical Night Restaurant and near Sheppard Avenues near Morningside, while Khan was walking back to the car in the parking lot.

The video surveillance shown in court captured Waldron walking to Khan, pulling his gold chain from his neck, and then shooting him into his chest.
Waldron, wearing a mask, then calmly walked to another car in the parking lot, grabbed the gold chain of the man sitting in the driver’s seat, and shot him before driving his window opens.
Dante Roopchand, the unsuspecting victim, survived. Assistant official Paul Kelly told O’Marra in sentencing terms, “It’s only fortunate that he (Roopchand) was not killed.”
During the trial, the gunshot victims were robbed in the nearby square just one and a half hours before Khan testified of murder. Waldron is charged with robbing a firearm related to the incident. The charges are still in court.
“Peter Khan and the robbery and the murders of Dante Roopchand were not launched at all. These were not impulsive behaviors. Peter Khan and Peter Khan and Dante Roopchand were allegedly good young people who committed horrible crimes against them and committed horrible crimes against them.”
“This is another tragic event involving the use of guns in our city and I hope it will stop one day.”
Khan’s husband, who was with her husband on the night of the deadly shooting celebrated her birthday, said she felt relieved.
“I’m glad we’ve served justice for Peter. Given the seriousness of the case and given his criminal background, I’m a little frustrated with parole eligibility.”
During the sentencing hearing, the court heard that Waldon had uninterrupted criminal records of robbery, assault, violation of court orders and trafficking in narcotics.
Waldron has obtained DNA orders, a lifelong weapon ban and contactless orders with victims.
