One dead, two seriously injured after the vehicle runs away from the police

One person died and two others were seriously injured after a driver fled the police and fell early Sunday afternoon.

Shortly before 2 pm, inspector Peter Raynes of Tāmaki Makauau police said a police vehicle saw a car traveling at excessive speed along Great South Road in Penrose, Auckland, and signaled to stop.

He didn’t do that, and instead he fled, hitting two other cars, Raynes said.

The driver of the vehicle that supposedly failed to stop was transported to the hospital in a critical condition.

One person from one of the other vehicles died at the scene, while another was also seriously injured.

Another person was in a moderate condition.

Raynes added that the severe collision unit was examining the scene and the road remains closed.

A ‘critical incident investigation’ was released and the team was working to establish the complete circumstances around the accident, he said. They are working to support the affected and their families, as well as the employees who were involved.

The incident was also referred to the independent police conduct authority.
