Police confirmed that one person died and another was injured after a light plane crash near Hawera, north of Wanaka, on Saturday.

The New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center in New Zealand said the plane crashed into the Dingleburn Valley on the east side of Lake Hawea, north of Wanaka.

Police said emergency services were called around 1:30 pm.

One of the two occupants of the plane was taken by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital in critical condition and the second person died, police said.

A scene guard was in place overnight and police said he would be asking questions on behalf of the civil aviation authority and the coroner.
