A human placenta was found in a park in Oldham.
Greater Manchester Police said it works to determine the circumstances of the incident and ensure that no one is injured.
The power said the discovery, in the townWerneth Park was treated as a welfare investigation.
Officers believe that the mother and baby in question need medical attention, with the birth that has taken place over the past 24 hours.
Police are asking someone with information to come forward after officers were called to the park by a member of the public at about 14.40 Nm on Friday.
The ‘suspicious item’ at the scene was later confirmed that it was a human placenta by medical experts, the power said.
Police remain in the park while the search for the area continues.
A spokesman for the power said there was no risk to the wider community.

Detective Inspector Andy Day said: ‘Incidents of this nature are extremely rare, but of course it will cause concern, and we share the concerns.
“I want to make it clear that at this stage we are not a criminal, but one in the well -being of a mum and baby.”
He added: “We have several inquiries to try to identify who the placenta belongs to, including looking for different British databases and linking with a number of partner agencies.”
Police also ask someone who knows the identity of the mother or baby to make contact.
