An old synonic who threatened to throw off his ex -mate in an unused pit was jailed for 24 years for attempted murder.

Douglas Clifton Brown, 56, attacked Camilla Welby and put her in a complete fright that she was about to kill ‘, a court heard.

Judge Alice Robinson, who sentenced him to the Norwich Crown Court, said Clifton Brown became angry about a slight perceived minor while driving to drinks at a friend’s home.

He was supposed to take her home, but instead drove past the turn to Miss Welby’s house.

Said the judge said Clifton Brown, of Congham, in Norfolktold Miss Welby he would “drop her at the next town and she could walk home in the dark”, but then started driving again after he “successfully tried us to get her out of the car”.

“On the way you were angry, you screamed and hit her repeatedly,” the judge said, noting that Miss Welby’s nose was broken and that her eye legs were crushed.

She told Clifton Brown: “You said that you would take her (Miss Welby) to an unused pit at High House, throw her in it, then yourself.”

The High House estate has been in his family for generations and is now a wedding.

The judge said the defendant “recently followed the water in the pit. It was at a remote wooded place”.

Clifton Brown drove to the pit, got out of the car, and Miss Welby was in “completely scared that she was about to be killed,” the judge said.

She said Miss Welby was able to grab her scarf and turn it around Clifton Brown’s neck to get him off her.

The judge described the incident as an “angry, drunk and petulant, although extreme, response to the perceived minor of Ms Welby earlier that evening and probably a build -up of antagonism during your relationship”.

“I accept that the impulsivity associated with ADHD may have played a role in the offense by harming your ability to exercise appropriate judgment,” she said.

Clifton Brown was convicted of attempted murder after an earlier hearing and earlier admitted to causing serious bodily harm and a threat to kill.
