The Auckland Council’s advisory team says no proposal for a new or updated “main stadium” is viable.
The counselors will vote on Thursday if one of two competing proposals will endorse: an update to Eden Park or a whole new stadium on Auckland’s edge.
Both proponents released viability reports to the Board in February, in preparation for the week’s governing body meeting, but board officials are not convinced either.
“None of the proponents have shown that their proposal is viable without significant public financing,” reads official advice from the team.
The so -called Eden Park update would include a retractable ceiling and an increase in seats.
It is “technically viable, but today it is not financially viable because it depends on significant public funding,” the consultants said.
Te Tōangaroa, an ambitious proposal of $ 1 billion for a new 55,000 -seat stadium in the center of Auckland, “did not show that his proposal was technically or commercially viable at this stage and suggested that he needed more time to do so.”
The consultants presented to the counselors several options.
The first was to refuse the two proposals, but the team also noted that the counselors could move on and endorse one anyway.
The team also noted that the Eden Park update could proceed as an staged venture, with the board only endorsing part of the update.
Another option was to give both proponents more time to defend your case and postpone the decision even more.
