Soon, hunters will be able to access longer licenses and receive automatic reminders fifteen days before they expire.
The government is changing the hunting permission system from May.
From then on, licenses will be valid for up to 12 months, above the current four -month period, and hunters will receive renewal reminders 14 days before they expire.
Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager said the changes were part of a significant update to the existing system that would make life easier for the 34,000 hunters hunting on open conservation lands.
“The underlying technology of the current hunting license system is outdated and needs an update, and is being improved based on the direct feedback from hunters.
“This update will support more hunters, national and international, leaving and doing what they love.”
Meager said the update would also make the permission system more reliable and easier to navigate mobile devices, making it easier to obtain moving licenses.
“Instead of the 54 hunter areas that hunters currently choose, the system will be simplified for hunters to choose eight regions, four on the North Island and four on the South/Stewart Island Island.
“All existing hunting areas in the larger region will be automatically included in permission, and hunters can also select all New Zealand hunting areas in the press of a single button.”
Meager said the changes may be simple, but they reflected a government committed to facilitating hunting and fishing on conservation lands.
The new system will be launched by the Conservation Department in May.
