Kenny Macaskill promised to deliver Alex Salmond’s “Dream of Independence” for Scotland after being elected as the new leader of the Alba party.
Former Prime Minister, Mr. Salmond, founded the party after leaving the SNP and his death last year he searched for a new leader.
Acting leader, Mr. Macaskill, won the leadership competition with 1,331 votes (52.3%), the party announced at an event in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
The former MSP and MP beat the competitive candidate MSP Ash Regan, who received 1,212 votes (47.7%).
The competition was activated after Mr Salmond (69) died of a heart attack while attending a conference in North Macedonia in October.
After his election, Mr. Macaskill said: “It was an election brought about by the tragic death of our founder Alex Salmond.
“He will never be forgotten, but the duty that now falls for me and all members of the Alba parties is to deliver his dream of independence.”

Neale Hanvey was elected to Mr. To replace MacAskill as Deputed Leader, and won 77.8% of the vote with the 22.2% going to challenger Chris Mceleny.
The Alba party has been set up by Mr Salmond in the run -up to the 2021 Holyrood election. No party candidate was elected at the polls.
Mr Macaskill, a former Snp Secretary of Justice, averted to Alba in 2021 while serving as MP for East Lothian.
He disputed the Alloa and Grangemouth seats during last year’s general election, but lost the Brian Leishman of Labor.
Mr. Hanvey also exposed from the SNP to Alba in 2001, while MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.
He stood for the renowned Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy constituency in the general election of 2024, but was defeated by the Melanie Ward of labor.
