Myanmar, Bangkok shaken by 7.7 earthquake

The buildings were also shaking in Bangkok, the Thai capital about 1000 km south, and hundreds of people panicked. The negotiation on the stock exchange was interrupted.

United States Geological Research (USGS) said the earthquake was of magnitude 7.7 and at a depth of 10 km. It was followed by a powerful tremor after the tremor.

The epicenter was about 17.2 km from the city of Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.5 million.

There was no immediate word from Myanmar’s authorities about damage.

An officer from the Mianmar Fire Department told Reuters: “We have started searching and we have been Yangon to see if there are victims and damage. So far, we have no information yet.”

Mandalay’s social media posts, the former real capital of Myanmar that is in the center of his Buddhist heart, has shown collapsed buildings and debris scattered through the city streets. Reuters could not immediately check the posts.

A witness in the city told Reuters: “We all left home when it all started shaking. I witnessed a five -story building building in front of my eyes. Everyone in my city is on the road and no one dares to return to the buildings.”

Another witness to the city, Htet Naing Oo, told Reuters that a tea store had collapsed with several people arrested.

“We couldn’t get in,” she said. “The situation is very bad.”

A third witness said that a mosque in the city was severely damaged.

China’s Xinhua News Agency said strong tremors were felt in the southwest of Yunnan province, which borders Myanmar, but there were no reports of casualties.

Witnesses contacted in Yangon said many people left buildings in the city, the largest in the country.

Witnesses in Bangcoc said people took to panic streets, many of them invited from bathrobes and swimming clothes.

An office tower in downtown Bangkok Osciled from side to least for at least two minutes, with gates and windows ranging loudly, witnesses said.

Hundreds of employees archived through emergency stairs while some shocked and panic workers freeze. High shouts could be heard as the building continued to swing.

Outside, hundreds gathered in the afternoon sun, while employees with medical kits found office chairs for elderly and shock people.
