A father was awakened with his children’s screams after his mother attacked the trio while sleeping at his home in Sydney’s suburb.
The 47 -year -old woman is under police guard at the hospital on suspicion that she was trying to kill the three children – 10, 13 and 16 – during the attack on Monday morning.
She would have turned the knife in herself after the stab.
“Until we have the opportunity to talk to her, we will not know what her intention was,” Detective Naomi Moore’s superintendent told reporters.
“But we are certainly taking it as a potential murder attempt.”
The father and children – one of whom they have paraplegia – were all in their rooms of the family home in Baulkham Hills, northwest of Sydney, during the attack, police said.
The incident that woke up that his father was “completely unexpected,” said Det Supt Moore.
“When I wake up what I would believe to be several screams or screams, he … guaranteed the gun and contacted the police,” she said.
“Certainly there is no history of domestic violence reported to the police … There are no grandparents (restriction orders).
“This is the first time the police have been responsible for any kind of domestic situation.”
It was believed that the woman was behaving “a little irregular” in the days before stab wounds, said Det Supt Moore.
A 10 -year -old boy and two 13 and 16 -year -old girls, who believes he is paraplegic, were treated by the paramedics before being taken to the hospital with his mother.
The filming of the scene showed one of the children being extended with a pink plush on his lap.
Det suppt Moore said the incident was tragic.
“As sad as we do not deal with this family before, and I just would like we might have, maybe we could have reached and helped this family earlier,” she said.
A crime scene was established as police investigate the incident.
