More than 400 Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations are calling on Sir Keir Starmer to launch an investigation he promised to possible British involvement in the Golden Temple Massacre.
The groups signed a letter sent to the Prime Minister requesting a commitment in 2022.
The calls are related to questions about which part the British and British special forces played in the murders of 1984, in which hundreds of Sikhs to the Indian Military entered the temple complex where separatists sought refuge.
Politically latest: PM recognizes ‘press’ as bills rise
In 2014, the British government accidentally revealed that Margaret Thatcher was aware of the intention of the Indian state to attack the temple and in the months before the attack, a British SAS officer gave advice to the Indian government.
In a subsequent investigation commissioned by David Cameron, a single officer gave advice – and there was “no evidence of the British government’s involvement in the operation itself”.
However, this investigation has been criticized as a coverage due to the limited scope and rapid timeframe.
In 2022, Mr. Keir Wrote to all Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations, saying: ‘A future labor government will open an independent investigation into Britain’s military role in the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It is important that we are open, transparent and reproached in understanding any role that the UK has played in such events.
“This is something I know is important to our Sikh communities here and all over the world.”
However, an announcement about the investigation is not yet to realize.
In the letter sent to the Prime Minister by the Sikh Federation, Sir Keir said: “If eventually proposed by a Labor Government, fail to deliver the ‘truth’, as promised by you, it will have great political consequences for the Sikh community’s support for labor in future elections.”
The federation says an investigation should be announced by May 31.

In a letter to LPs of Labor, the Sikh Federation also called on them to put the government pressure to start an investigation.
The organization also said it heard “extremely worrying rumors” that the Foreign, Commonwealth Office and Development were under pressure from the Indian government to “avoid or limit” an independent investigation.
It added: “It is understood that civil servants advise that a public investigation is expensive and can damage the relationship with India.”
The UK is currently trying to negotiate a new trade agreement with India in the wake of Brexit. Attempts by the conservative government have failed due to a difference in position on visas.
There is a campaign among some in the Sikh community that an independent nation -known as Khalistan -is established from parts of the Punjab region in the Northern India.
