US border agents have made more attacks on eggs and egg -based products since the beginning of this year than of Fentanyl, the official statistics show.
According to the data released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in January and February 2025, officials intercepted the deadly drug, compared to 197 the previous year.
But it was nothing compared to the 3.254 egg-related attacks during the same period no more than twice as much as the same two months in 2024.
The figures, which were first reported by the Canadian Business News website The Logic, hold only the number of “seizure events” recorded by CBP for each type of smuggling, rather than the actual amount. The latter equation is not possible, as CBP releases only the weight of medicines that seized the agricultural products.
Nevertheless, this illustrates the growing scope of egg smuggling, as prices rise on average as high as $ 8.05 per dozen due to bird flu outbreaks and allegedly priced by the highly concentrated poultry industry.
It also undermines the rationale for Donald Trump’s trade war against Mexico and Canada, which he believes is essential to stop Fentanyl flooding in the US, but which, according to opponents, will increase the price of everyday products. (Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported that less than 1 percent of the Fentanyl intercepted at the US border came from Canada.)
Said a CBP spokeswoman Newsweek That there was a 36 percent year -year -old increase in the “eggs detained” at ports of access during the five months ending February.
Prices have since fallen from their peak at the end of February, apparently because inflation-capable consumers are unwilling to eliminate such high labels.
